2011 Season

Away match vs Kirby B, 16 August

With all our men either injured or on holiday, it was pleasing for our noble subs to have some close games against an experienced team.

Dan/Hilary:6-8, 5-8, 8-2

Robert L/B-J: 7-9, 4-8, 8-5

Roderick/Ros: 5-8, 5-8, 5-8

Away match vs. Essex B 19 August

Again, all the chaps in our team were brave subs -  the stars of the evening collected 2 sets, so Dan and Hilary are the heroes. B-J was captain, in the absence of a wrist-compromised Ros.

Score: 2-7.

Dedham Vs Wivenhoe

Wind and sun blessed our first,  fun-packed match vs Wivenhoe. Close games and valiant efforts were rewarded by a 3-6 loss where every pair boasted just the one win – making nonsense of attempts at ranking the pairs. Wivenhoe put on the lights, so we had to keep going until something to ten – phew!
Ian and Ros: 7-9,8-6,7-9. (22 games won)
Matt and Christine: 1-8,8-6,4-8.(13 games won)
Martin and B-J: 7-9, 2-8, 8-6.(17 games won.) (Make of that what you will.)

Home match vs Essex B, Friday 10 June

Ian and Ros 4-8, 8-6, 8-3

Matt and Hilary 3-8,5-8, 7-4( opponents dropped out , injured )

Martin and B-J 5-8,5-8, 8-6

Another fun evening of very genial company and good tennis. Despite Ian being ON FIRE, (quite a spectacle), we just failed to win overall, going down 4-5.

Are opposition teams more friendly than they used to be? Very little gnashing of teeth and line call arguments these days. Does anyone else miss all the gamesmanship and naked hostility?

Did we lose this match because we are all too nice??

At tea, Martin’s marshmallow and fruit stickettes gave some consolation.

Match reports: Friday 24 June v. Kirby B and Thursday 30 June v. Spring Lane

Before pulling the curtain swiftly over the first result, I must point out with pride that each pair in the team (minus their recovering captain) managed one pleasingly close set against a strong side before weather stopped play at the end of the second round; well fought, all.  Fortune smiled broadly, however, with a 7/2 win on 30 June where three tiebreaks fell in our favour, with B-J and Martin walking off with the best result of three winning sets.

V. Kirby B:

Hilary/Ian: 8/9, 4/8

B-J/Matt: 3/8, 7/9

Christine/Martin: 6/8, 5/8

V. Spring Lane:

Ros/Dan: 9/8, 6/8, 8/3

B-J/Martin: 8/4, 9/8, 8/4

Christine/Matt: 9/8, 4/8, 8/2

Away match vs Spring Lane A, Thursday 7 July.

It’s good to be able to report a convincing win. Ian and Ros conceded the fewest games – a lead that they need to work to hang on to, having Matt and Christine yapping conspicuously at their heels with two impressive wins ‘to love’- in every sense!

Ian/Ros: 8/1, 8/2, 8/1

Martin and Hilary: 7/9, 8/3, 8/0.

Matt and Christine: 8/6, 8/0, 8/0.

Dedham B v Wivenhoe – The first match of the season started with a defeat  however according to Ros – the acting captain- the match was , for the 1st and 2nd couples, very good, with good close games and lots of fun and excitement.  The 3rd couple didn’t get going quickly but they were doing well in the last round when rain joined the darkness and forced to stop play. Despite the result the team felt  it was good fun.

Dedham B v Kirby B - Kirby defaulted. According to the League’s  Rules ” … a team that wins a match by default shall receive a score equal to the best score achieved by another team against that defaulting team, with the proviso that the score must be at least the minimum for winning the match (ie 8 points for a 5-4 win)“, therefore we were awarded the minimum 8  points .

Dedham B v Colchester Lawn A – We had a lovely evening for tennis on Friday 25th June for our Mixed B match against a very strong Colchester Lawn A team.  The scores were all very close. Christine and Martin, who had never played together before, had scores of 6-8, 6-8, 9-7; our other pairs had similar results.  Unfortunately Matt hurt his shoulder in the second round.  He managed to finish that round but was unable to continue.  So despite the closeness of the matches we lost 3-6. Thanks Christine who took over the captaincy for the day and wrote the  match report.

DedhamB v D’Court -  Although it was difficult to get a third man John stepped at the last minute to complete the team and in a very hot summer evening we managed our first win of the season. This was Roderick first match and he and Ros made a very good pair winning two of  their sets. So did Hilary and Robert. Unfortunately John and Sara only managed the one that but was enough to finish 5-4.

DedhamB v D’Court - In a not too hot evening  the team was again stroked by bad luck .    This time it was Russell’s turn and, despite being up in the third set , he  had to retire after  pulling his hamstring . Matt and Sara playing together for the first time enjoyed the experience but only got one set, Hilary and Robert in turn won two sets . This was an enjoyable evening  but unfortunately we lost 4-5.

DedhamB v Col. LawnA - This was another enjoyable evening of tennis but unfortunately bad luck is following us and this time was Ros turn, she took a tumble in the second round and hurt her hand forcing her to stop playing the third round. As it happened the match was stopped after the first game of the last round because the rain was making the grass unplayable. We split the result of the remaining ongoing games and the final result was 1-8.

DedhamB v KirbyB – At this stage of the season the light starts to fade earlier and unfortunately matches tend to consist in two sets inevitably affecting the final result. Unfortunately the match had to be called off when Dan and Sara were 7-4 up, Russell and Debby at 5-2 and we have to half the final set. The final result was 2.5 – 6.5.

DedhamB v WivenhoeHalford’s early return from holiday on Tuesday saved the team from almost certain relegation. But despite being disadvantaged by only playing two pairs, the team’s performance was excellent, resulting in a 4-5 loss that didn’t reflect how closely we were to win the match.  Thanks to the players for their efforts and apologies to Lilian for her late stand-down from the team.
