Dedham Ladies Day Doubles Tournament 2015

Thursday 11th June was the annual Ladies’ Tournament at Dedham Tennis Club. Players from other clubs around Colchester & Dedham participated in the American tournament, which has been held for over 20 years.

After a full morning’s play in glorious sunshine, 4 finalists took to the court for a 15 point tie-break to decide the winners, watched by an enthralled crowd. Hayley Everett of Dedham & Dominica Yannaghas of Hadleigh eventually overcame Christine Clark of Dedham & Sue Dixon of Lexden Rackets & Fitness Club 16-14.

They were presented with prizes, vouchers kindly donated by Stringers’ World, after which a delicious lunch was served by the Dedham ladies.

    Dedham Mens Open Doubles 2013

On a glorious middle Sunday of Wimbledon, Dedham Tennis Club hosted its annual Doubles Open. In all 24 players participated with all 4 local leagues represented – namely Halstead (Sudbury TC), Chelmsford (Great Baddow), Ipwsich (Holbrook TC, Grundisburgh) & Colchester (Dedham, Garrison, Little Clacton, The Essex).

Perfect form on the service action by Oliver Sellers

The format as in previous years allowed for handicapping, so top players such as Leon Jennings, Gareth Thomas & James Prior had the unenviable task of starting every game in some sets 0:30 down. The handicapping, while never an exact science proved reasonably accurate as none of the 12 pairs managed to win all 3 sets in the group stage (Results_Tennis_Tournament_2013). Some great tussles in the early stages saw Sachio Ando & Rob Sweeney draw 6-6 with Peter Cook & Roderick Main, while eventual winners the Sellers Brothers (Harvey & Oliver) dropped their only point of the day drawing 6-6 with Dan Harty & Matt Smith.

After 18 sets in the group stages 4 pairs emerged to contest the semi finals, the aforementioned Sellers Brothers made it a family affair as they played against their father Toby, partnered by uncle Hugo. Despite the bravado of the elder statesmen they had no answer to the power and mobility of Sellers the younger on this occasion. The other semi final saw Neil Weston (Dedham) & Gerry Borley (Little Clacton), who came together on the day to form a very accomplished pair win a battle of attrition with Ando & Sweeney, winning through in a tie break. The final was an engaging affair, but ultimately Neil & Gerry succumbed to the power play of Harvey & Oliver.

A huge thanks to our sponsors for the event – Stringers World & David Hall as well as to all the club members who helped to make it happen, in particular Matt Smith & James Prior as well as Caroline Weston, Russel Sainty & Richard Whitehouse for helping on the day.

Ladies Tournament 2013 – Great Success

Dedham Tennis Clubs annual Ladies Doubles Open Tournament took place on a bright if breezy Thursday morning in late May. A full compliment of 24 ladies entered with representation from a large number of clubs in the Colchester & Ipswich Leagues.  While the tennis was sumptuous at times, the star attraction for many was the beautiful lunch (a big thanks to all who prepared, presented and served up).

All players played 4 rounds of 8 games, interchanging partners for every round. The 4 highest scorers then played 15pt tie-break in the semi final & final in which Noriko Kelly (Lexden R&F) & Tip Flory (Ipswich) pipped Anne Hutchison & Diana Huntingford (Ipswich). A huge thanks to our generous sponsors,  Stringers World of Brantham who provided tennis prizes for the winners & runner up.

Finally a big thanks to the Dedham Ladies for organizing a great event.

    Henry Green 2013

Fantastic turnout & fantastic tennis today for the clubs annual Henry Green Tournament. The format of 15 minute playing slots ensured all players had lots of court time, with some notable showings – particularly from Penelope Wilbraham & Charlie Clarke. In the end we had a top class final with Hilary Cairns pairing up with Sachio Ando, while Martin Picker played with the aforementioned Penelope. The final went to Hilary & Sachio on a score of 4-1. Thanks to James for all the organising and to Julie for the great photos below
